There’s a lot to like about a full-size SUV like the 2019 Toyota Highlander. To show you exactly what this vehicle has to offer drivers in the Massapequa, Seaford, and Long Island areas, our team at Toyota of Massapequa covered some of our favorite features in this 2019 Toyota Highlander review.
2019 Toyota Highlander Powertrain Review
Under the hood of the 2019 Toyota Highlander, you’ll find one of two powertrains, designed to suit different needs.
If you’re a commuter or someone who carpools with the kids on a regular basis, you’ll probably like the highly drivable 2.7L I-4 engine that delivers 185 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with a 6-speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) with Snow mode—which is especially useful for those winter morning trips to school.
On the other hand, if you have some heavy work to do, you may prefer the 3.5L V6 engine. This engine generates 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque, and can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. It’s also paired with an 8-speed ECT-i with uphill/downhill shift logic to help you take on steep climbs and descents while towing.
You can equip your SUV with front-wheel drive or opt for the available Dynamic Torque-Control All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system that automatically adjusts torque as necessary to help improve your traction control.
2019 Highlander Interior Dimensions and Convenience
As you’d expect from an SUV in this class, the Toyota Highlander has plenty of space inside its cabin for everything you might need. It seats seven or eight passengers comfortably depending on whether you have a second-row bench seat or captain’s chairs.
As the driver, you’ll have 40.7 inches of headroom and second- and third-row passengers can get comfortable with 38.4 inches and 27.7 inches of legroom, respectively. You can also use the 40/60 split-folding feature of both rear seats to help maximize space between passengers and cargo.
Speaking of cargo, you’ll have the following cargo area dimensions:
Cargo volume behind third row: 8 cubic feet
Cargo volume behind second row:3 cubic feet
Cargo volume behind first row:7 cubic feet
If you need a little help making your voice carry the full length of the cabin, you can use the available Driver Easy Speak feature to speak through the audio system.
Toyota Highlander Safety Technology
If safety is a concern of yours when deciding on a new SUV, you’re not alone. Many local drivers make this a priority. Luckily, the Toyota Highlander delivers with the standard Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) suite.
This suite of safety technology features includes systems like:
Automatic High Beams
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
It also comes with the Pre-Collision System with pedestrian Detection (PCS w/ PD). PCS w/ PD scans up ahead for unseen hazards like stopped or slow-moving vehicles, or pedestrians. If detected, it’ll issue an alert to slow down and can even hit the brakes for you, if necessary, to try to avoid a potential collision. This feature is especially helpful when driving through a school zone during dismissal.
